Inlite
The world's first platform for personal growth combined with award-winning cinema, stories, science-based activities and data to improve the users daily performance. I worked as the sole designer to redesign the mobile and desktop applications to improve the site's user experience.
Pipeline:
Inlite.me is the first self-care product to marry award winning movies with scientifically proven methods to improve one's wellbeing and through difficult times. The current design is strung with long text paragraphs and little instruction to guide the user through the site. As Cinematherapy is a more novel field, many users found the experience to be frustrating due to lack of clarity.
Problem Space:
The overall user experience of the current Inlite.me's design is cluttered and lacks clear instructions for the user.
Goal:
De-clutter the platform by adding more imagery and provide accessibility to instructions and support.

Problem Space
Inlite is a unique self-care product that combines acclaimed movies with scientifically validated techniques to enhance one's well-being during challenging times. However, the current website design is overwhelmed by lengthy text paragraphs and fails to provide adequate guidance to users. Since Cinematherapy is a relatively new field, many users have experienced confusion and frustration with the site's lack of clarity. In general, the user experience of Inlite's current design is cluttered and lacks clear instructions for users to follow.
Solution

The overall user experience of the current Inlite.me's design is cluttered and lacks clear instructions for the user.

The solution focuses more on keeping the user's attention on the relevant information given at Inlite.me and provides step by step instructions for new users that are unfamiliar with Inlite.me or cinematherapy. Through interviews and usability testings, I found that although users are interested in the concept of being able to improve their mental well-being by using movies, they found that Inlite.me left them confused and frustrated. The redesign of Inlite.me emphasizes and focuses on providing users with relevant and useful information to their users .

Discover

Prior to conducting user interviews, I performed a Heuristics Evaluation to methodically assess the current site's design and usability. While cinematherapy is a unique tool in the mental health industry, there are several other self-care applications available in this field, such as Headspace, Insight Timer, and Calm, which mainly focus on meditation and self-enlightenment. To comprehend any similarities and differences that Inlite might have with these apps, I conducted a comparative analysis.

Heuristics Analysis
I conducted a heuristics analysis of the current platform to identify any current issues. Based on the analysis, it was clear that the current site lacked find-ability, clarity, and credibility due to the layout and cluttered format of the pages.
Comparative Analysis
I conducted a Comparative analysis to identify the similar and different features Inlite may have with other companies. There was a lot of common features that encourages user retention and compared to other companies, Inlite is short on features.
Persona
Define

To further identify issues within the market space, I sent out a survey, targeting the demographic of those who have used a mental wellness/self-care application in the past or present and selected 5 different users to understand their behaviors and expectations. With this information, I affinity mapped the data from the interviews and created our persona.

Following the interviews, I was able to conclude with the following relevant insights:

Insights:

  • Users prefer applications with features that will help them be consistent in app usage.
  • Users often are willing to pay for applications that are low cost and/or will use often.
  • Having separate categories and activities are important to users.
  • Users prefer to have a detailed explanation/tutorial on how to use the application.
  • Simplicity, convenience and good visuals are important when using an application.
Mary-Ann is a consultant living in NYC. She enjoys watching Netflix and is an avid lover of movies. Her work as a consultant is stressful and she finds happiness in watching various Netflix movies and shows. Recently due to covid, she has been trying to find new ways to improve her mental wellness.
Behaviors: Her mind is usually crowded with thoughts so she likes to write them down. She enjoys low cost subscriptions, coupons and discounts. She tends to download apps recommended by her friends/family or through ads that she sees on instagram and facebook.
Needs: Before using an app, she needs a detailed explanation of how it works. She needs something that is simple, easy to use and has good visuals.
Challenges: Some activities on some apps take too long to complete. She often forgets to use applications so its difficult for her to stay consistent. Some free trials don't give her enough of an understanding to pa for the premium subscription.
Goals: She wants to be able to integrate her love for movies into something more therapeutic. She wants to be able to easily add it to her daily routine and to enjoy an app with different features to keep her entertained and motivated.

Usability Testing (Existing Platform)
Design

To identify any pain points and challenges users face within the existing platform, I performed 5 usability tests. The insights obtained from these tests were valuable and contributed significantly to my redesign process.

5/5 Users: found it challenging to extract the main points from the page due to the presence of lengthy paragraphs.
  • 4/5 users found it difficult to read lengthy texts without some kind of imagery.

3/5 Users: found the personalized quiz section to be excessively long and was curious about its duration.

3/5 Users: thought they could watch the movie on the platform.
  • User was wondering why the platform didn't let them know where they can find the movie.

5/5 Users: had difficulty finding the Gifting page
  • User wondered why it was so discreet.

Deliver

During the four-month duration, I completely redesigned the desktop and mobile website, although the designs are not flawless, they are much more user-friendly and intuitive, particularly for new cinematherapy users. The original site had a lot of text and unclear directions, but the new design includes more visuals and clear instructions to ensure a smooth and satisfying user experience.

To deliver the designs to the engineers, I created them a style guide to follow, providing them with the site colors and text fonts as well as any icons or imagery they needed to develop the site. Additionally we used Zeplin to help streamline this handoff between myself and the developers, reducing the risk of miscommunication and errors. This allows developers to easily access important design details, such as color codes, typography, and spacing, directly from Zeplin, which helps to ensure consistency in the final product.

Next Steps and Constraints

As a strong advocate for mental wellness and the importance of self-care, I admire Inlite's innovative and contemporary approach to promoting mental wellbeing. During my four-month contract on this project, I appreciated the freedom granted by Ana, the CEO of Inlite, to exercise my creativity and contribute to the project. However, due to the limited duration of my contract, I was unable to conduct a usability test on the redesigned platform. I believe that usability testing is crucial at every stage of the design process as it provides valuable feedback that can inform further iterations of the platform and enhance the overall user experience. As the next steps, I highly recommend that Inlite conducts continuous and ongoing usability testing to ensure a great user experience, and to implement any necessary changes to optimize the platform.
